Difference Between Optometrists, Opticians and Ophthalmologists.

Optometrists

Optometrists are primary eye care practitioners who are professionally trained to provide comprehensive eye health and vision examinations. Their services include diagnosing of general eye conditions, checking of eye functions and the prescribing of spectacles and contact lenses to correct the refractive error of the eye.

Optometrists offer advice on the usage of spectacles and contact lenses and manage contact lens related complications. Some specializes in Ortho-Keratology, Binocular Vision or Keratoconus.

In Singapore, Optometrists would at least have completed a 3-year course, leading to a Diploma in Optometry awarded by Singapore Polytechnic. However, many have upgraded themselves to Bachelor, Master and even Doctorate degrees.

Opticians

Opticians work in retail optical shops and provide their professional advice on the usage of ophthalmic lenses, and the selection of ophthalmic frames. They are especially skilled in the dispensing, repairing and maintaining of optical products.

Most Opticians in Singapore learn their skill and knowledge on the job. However, a number of them upgrade themselves with certifications. Some of these Opticians are qualified to practice contact lens.

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmologists are medically trained doctors who are specialized in the medical and surgical care of the eye. They provide a range of services including eye examinations, treatment of eye diseases, surgery, and the management of eye problems that are caused by systemic diseases.

Most Ophthalmologists would have completed at least 6 years of medical training, before specializing into Ophthalmology. Most of them work in hoSspitals, and some open their own private clinics.
