Optometric Eye Examination
Most Singaporeans
visit the Optical Shop for the checking of their degree (or Refractive
Error). However, it is also important that other tests are done to ensure
that your eyes are in good health. Some of the important tests are listed
below.
Refraction and Visual Acuity
Refraction is the checking of the degree of “Power” in the
eye. Optometrists will determine the optimum correction without compromising
comfort and eye health. Before and after performing the Refraction,
a check on how well you see letters should be done.
Slit Lamp Bio-Microscopy
The Slit Lamp Bio-microscope is used to check the health of the front
part of the eye. This includes the Cornea, Conjunctiva, Iris, Crystalline
Lens, Eye Lids and other parts of the front eye. It is also a very essential
test to determine the health of the eye before Contact Lens insertion,
and also the determination of the ‘fitting’ of the lens.
Ophthalmoscopy
Optometrists use an Ophthalmoscope to observe the internal structures
of the eye. A trained Optometrist is able to check for abnormal changes
from the Crystalline Lens to the Retina. This is extremely useful in
detecting various eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy
and Age Related Macular Degeneration.
Tonometry
Tonometry is the checking of the eye pressure. The fluid in the eye
causes this pressure. Optometrists in Singapore are able to use the
Non-Contact Air Puff Tonometer to determine the eye pressure. Eye pressure
is an important test, as diseases like Glaucoma may present with high
eye pressure. This will in turn damage the Retina Nerves.
